ANZ Rewards Black Credit Card

Pauline Hatch
Pauline is a personal finance expert at CreditCard.com.au, with 9 years in money, budgeting and property reporting under her belt. about this card.

Who suits the ANZ Rewards Black credit card?

Globetrotter: you love travelling, and get a buzz from earning points that make your trips free and more fun. Deal Digger: you're always on the lookout for freebie perks like insurances, dining discounts and earning points for paying bills. Money Geek: you watch your accounts, and like budgeting and hitting money goals. You want good bang for your bucks.

Overall Rating

The ANZ Rewards Black credit card comes with the biggest lump sum of Rewards Points (equal to $650 in gift cards), plus a nice cashback bonus that helps offset the annual fee. It’s fair to say it gives a good impression straight up, and keeps on delivering with the highest rate of points per dollar than any other ANZ card.

It doesn’t earn frequent flyer points directly, but you can redeem your ANZ points for Velocity and other airline programs, giving you lots of flexibility in how you want to use your points.

What I love about the ANZ Rewards Black

The ANZ Rewards Black earns points, offers insurance, organises your pet’s weekly wash and pops cash back in your pocket when you buy shoes. If that sounds like an odd list of duties for a credit card, you’re right - but that’s exactly what this little superstar can do.

I’ll start with the big bonus offer, and then unpack the rest of the card’s features.

Bonus offer: When you sign up for a new card and spend $3000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months from approval, you can get:

  • 180,000 extra ANZ Rewards Points. It’s ANZ’s biggest bonus points offer.
  • $150 cashback onto your account. The credit is issued within 3 months of meeting the spending criteria.

Note: you won’t be eligible for these bonuses if you have held an ANZ card within the previous 12 months.

Earning ANZ Rewards points

The ANZ Rewards Points are tiered on this card. So, you’ll earn:

  • 2 ANZ Reward Points per $1 spent up to and including $5000
  • 1 ANZ Reward Point for every $1 spent over $5000

That means you can earn unlimited points on eligible purchases, but less once you’ve reached $5000 in a statement period.

Collapsible with Arrow

ANZ says most everyday purchases are eligible. Transactions that aren’t eligible to earn ANZ Rewards points include interest charges, fees, cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, balance transfers, Government Charges (includes but is not limited to payments for goods, services, charges and/or levies made to a local, state or federal government or statutory authorities or related agencies), transactions for gambling or gaming purposes and reversed or refunded transactions.

ANZ no longer awards points on BPAY transactions. We recommend reading the PDS to see the full list of exclusions.

Redeeming ANZ Rewards points

This is where we see the full flexibility of the ANZ Rewards Black. Earning ANZ Rewards points means you can redeem them directly or transfer them to a frequent flyer program you like. You can redeem points for:

  • Gift cards with retailers such as Woolworths, Bunnings, Myer and Apple
  • ANZ Cashback, where 1250 Rewards Points are equal to $5
  • Merchandise from hundreds of retailers at the ANZ Rewards Store
Or, transfer your points to these frequent flyer programs:
  • Velocity Frequent Flyer
  • Air New Zealand Airpoints
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Asia Miles

Other extras

This card comes with a host of extras across insurance, discounts and budgeting.

Complimentary insurance.
Insurances help to protect your purchases and make travelling cheaper. The ANZ Rewards Black includes:

Feature How it works
International and domestic travel insurance This travel insurance activates when you spend at least $250 of your travel expenses on the card and you have a return ticket (other eligibility criteria applies). The insurance may cover unexpected expenses such as cancellations, medical expenses, loss or theft of property and more.
Rental vehicle excess cover in Australia This is a truly great feature if you're going to be using a rental vehicle (which includes mini buses and campervans under certain weight limits). You may be able to claim the excess if your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen.
Purchase protection This insurance covers items you bought using the card that are lost, stolen or accidentally damaged, giving you a refund of the original purchase price. There are plenty of exclusions and terms, so read the PDS to understand what you’re covered for.
Extended warranty insurance You may be covered for an extended period if an item you bought using the card breaks down outside of the manufacturer’s standard warranty. For example, if you bought an oven with a one-year warranty, your card will offer another year's warranty on top. Exclusions and limits apply.
ANZ Falcon and Fraud guarantee ANZ has 24/7 fraud monitoring with ANZ Falcon and its ANZ Fraud Money Back Guarantee.

Concierge services.
ANZ’s concierge service is available 24 hours a day. Just call the number and the concierge will help you organise flights, itineraries and accommodation, and book event tickets and restaurants.

You can request help with day-to-day life, like choosing gifts and buying flowers to be delivered. It’s also how you can have your pet grooming organised on autopilot. It’s a nice perk to take some of the mental load out of life.

Cashrewards.
You can sign up for Cashrewards and earn cashback from over 2000 big brand names when you shop online (and earn ANZ Rewards Points at the same time).

Instalment plans.
You can nominate up to 99 purchases to be paid off in interest-free instalments over 3, 6 or 12 months. You can manage your plans via the ANZ App and cancel anytime without penalty.

Balance transfers.
You can transfer amounts over $100 from eligible non-ANZ credit cards and store cards, as long as you haven’t already reached 95% of your available credit limit. While many banks will turn off interest-free days while you have a balance transfer, ANZ says you’ll still get them if you pay your statement’s Closing Balance each month.

What’s not so great

I’ve given this card a big pat on the back so far, but there are a few things to be aware of.

First, as a premium card the annual fee is high. You’ll need to make sure you’re getting the value out of the points and extras to make it worth the ongoing cost.

Next, ANZ Rewards Points expire. You have 36 months to spend them from 31 December of the year the points were earned. If you close your ANZ Rewards account you have 90 days to use your points before they expire.

Lastly, if you want to add extra cardholders you’ll pay an Additional Cardholder fee of $10 and an annual Rewards Program Service fee of $55 per year ($65 in total per person).

Who suits the ANZ Rewards Black?

This is a card with a variety of benefits and loads of flexibility. It suits travellers, people who want points that turn into freebies, lifestyle extras and ways to save on interest.

Besides the sign-up offer it is not worth it. If you take into account the annual fee, plus any extra cardholder fee, and the rewards fee and offset this against the points you earn I don't think it is worth it. I spend about $2,500 monthly and the rewards value from this would hardly outweigh the cost of the fees with this card.

It is quite disappointing, but they now exclude BPAY transactions as something you don't earn points on. You didn't mention this in your review, people need to be aware of this.

Hi Ben, unfortunately that’s becoming standard practice now. One workaround is to pay via PayPal with the account linked to your credit card. But, as you've suggested, I’ve added a note about BPAY transactions to the review so everyone is aware. Thanks Ben!

Does my ANZ Frequent Flyer Black cover me for domestic travel and in particular cancelation
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    6 November 2024
Hi Frank, yes that card comes with domestic travel insurance and it does have cancellation cover, but there are many terms and conditions that come with it. It would be best to read through the travel insurance PDS to make sure you meet the eligibility requirements, and see how the cancellation cover works. Thanks Frank!

hello. im looking into the ANZ rewards black to earn velocity points. However i currently hold an ANZ frequent flyer black card. (different rewards program) will i still earn the bonus' offer if i were to get the ANZ rewards black?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    1 November 2024
Hi Mel, the terms say you’re not eligible for the bonus points if you currently hold or have held an ANZ Rewards credit card in the last 12 months. So yes, you’re correct, the programs are different and you should still be eligible for the bonus points. You can call ANZ directly to double check, but I went from a Frequent Flyer card to Rewards and got the bonus points myself. Thanks!

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    16 August 2024
Hi Brent, great question! You can earn unlimited points on eligible purchases in a statement period - that’s 2 ANZ Reward Points per $1 spent up to and including $5000, then 1 ANZ Reward Point for every $1 spent over $5000.

Hi I would like to know about a credit card that can earn points for anything? ie payments to suppiers and contractors, ATO invoices etc, does a card like this exist, also what say 100,000 points get you? like what does 100,000 points equal to in dollars?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    30 July 2024
Hi Daniel, most of those transactions would earn points (it does depend on how the supplier has set up their payment facility too), but only some cards earn points on government spending. We’ve compiled some here. Points have different values depending on what you’re redeeming it for. If you redeemed 100k points for cashback, it would be $400. Or, you could convert the points to Velocity which would be 50k points, equal to an economy trip from Sydney to LA. I hope that helps!

hello, would i be legible for this offer if I'm an existing ANZ customer
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    22 July 2024
Hi Paul, good question! Upon checking, the bonus points offer is only available to new and approved ANZ Rewards Black card applicants. If you’ve held or currently hold any of the ANZ Rewards card products in the last 12 months, you are not eligible. You can however check some of the other rewards credit cards for options.

Hi I can see the number of points earned when I spend on the credit card but no mention of how many points are required to receive a $20 voucher? Would you have anu guidance on that please.
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    23 May 2024
Hi Alex, if you’re referring to a $20 gift card, it depends on what brand you want to redeem your points for. For example a $20 Aldi gift card will set you back 4,800 ANZ Rewards Points, an Amazon $20 gift card is 4,445 points, whereas an Endota spa gift card for the same amount is 4,445 points and the same for Woolworths. You can check out the full list of gift cards available at the ANZ rewards store, which I’ve linked for you. Thanks Alex!

will international fees be charged if you pay for something online (eg booking.com)
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    6 May 2024
Hi Ian, this entirely depends on where the merchant is running the transaction from. If the merchant is overseas then you will be charged a 3% fee. From personal experience this can all depend on where you're booking and what currency it is in. E.g. A destination in Australia was in AUD and a booking in Ireland was in EUR. Double check inside the app before you confirm a booking. There are some credit cards out there that don't charge international fees, that could be worth comparing too.

Hi Mez, great question and one I get asked every now and then. So, you’ll need to spend at least $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months from when your card gets approved to get those extra 180,000 points. After that, whatever you spend per month is up to you. Hope that clears that up for you.

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    28 April 2024
Hi Michelle, yep you can use a regular credit card for your business, but it's recommended to keep your personal and business spending separate so life is easier at tax time. The reasons to choose a business credit card would be employee cards, setting limits on spending and being able to link to accounting software. So the choice is yours, depending on what you need. Thanks Michelle!

Hi Walter, completing the application process takes a couple of minutes. But the period where ANZ will asses your application can vary. If you are approved it could take over 7-10 days for your card to arrive in the mail.
